Anton Chekhov
Anton Chekhov was a Russian writer born in 1860 in Taganrog, on the Sea of Azov. His father, a violent drunk, had a grocery shop that went bankrupt. The whole family moved to Moscow and Anton - at just 16 - stayed behind to continue his education, and to work as a tutor. He supported his family for a few years, then moved to Moscow, were he studied medicine and wrote for newspapers and magazines to support his family. In 1884 he started his physician profession, which he considered his principal one though most of his income was already coming from his writing. As a doctor, he treated the poor free of charge. He died of tuberculosis in 1904.
